MATHEMATICS

At Illawarra Primary School, mathematics teaching is guided by the Maths Plus program in conjunction with the Brightpath maths suite of assessment from Pre-Primary to Year 6. Together, these provide a clear sequence of learning and support informed teaching decisions across the school.

Teachers use explicit, evidence-based teaching practices to develop students’ understanding of number, fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Lessons are carefully structured to build confidence and support deep mathematical understanding.

Assessment informs teaching and supports differentiation. Students who require additional support are identified and provided with targeted small-group intervention at the point of need, ensuring timely and effective support.

Through consistent practices and high expectations, students develop the skills and confidence needed to apply mathematics in a range of learning contexts.
