PLD underpins English teaching and learning at Illawarra Primary School from Kindergarten to Year 6. Teachers engage in ongoing, evidence-based PLD to ensure a consistent, high-quality approach to literacy instruction across the school.

Our English program is built on explicit, evidence-based teaching practices that support students to develop strong skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Reading instruction is systematic and focuses on phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Consistent whole-school practices ensure continuity and clarity as students progress through the years.

Students who require additional support are identified through assessment and provided with targeted intervention. Selected students in Pre-Primary to Year 2 participate in the MiniLit program to support early literacy acquisition and strengthen foundational reading skills. From 2026, the MacqLit program will be offered to students in Years 3–6 who require literacy intervention.

Writing is explicitly taught across all year levels, with students learning to plan, draft, edit and publish for a range of purposes and audiences. Grammar and punctuation are taught in context to support clear and accurate communication.

Assessment informs teaching and enables targeted differentiation, ensuring all students are supported and challenged to make progress.
